Kick-up rudder

Post by wrightslaw »

I have a Telstar 26, vintage abt 1973, sailed over from Great Britain by former owner who lived aboard it in the Caribbean and FL for many years.

We purchased it abt 20 years ago.

We live on the southern portion of the Chesapeake Bay at Stingray Pt with the Rappahannock River on north side and Piankatank River on the south. We have lots of small sandy islands and love to sail "Amazing Grace" up onto the beach. Years ago I sheared the rudder off when sailing at high speed over a sand bar. Have not sailed the boat for abt 5 years and are now having lots of work done on it and gearing up for this season. I am giving serious thought to installing some sort of kick-up rudder. I see that "ruddercraft" has some stock ones for various boats. Has anyone fabricated one for the old Telstar or had one made by one of the commercial companies?

I did google - images "kick-up rudder" - and saw a number of various options. Could not find any images on telstarowners.net or elsewhere for old Telstar.

Feel free to email me direct at petewrightslaw | at | gmail.com.

Thanks, Pete Wright

If you go to this link:

'Skybird' has exactly what you are looking for. Although the boat has been sold it might be possible to contact the new owner through the broker to get more detailed information.

Skybird's broker, Allan Veth of Evecom Multihulls, forwarded my email to him on to Skybird's former owner (Harry Vergouwen) who in turn sent me a detailed reply about his modification of the Telstar 26 rudder.

I recall that someone mounted a Farrier F27 Rudder on a Telstar.
