After the epoxy on the back rail was cured, I scarfed a piece of teak onto the front rail.

After that, I glued the front rail in-place.

And finally, added a 48" shim to make sure the piano hinge on the upper bunk will have a proper point to rotate. Everything is screwed together as well as being epoxied or glued.

Now that I have the anchor for the bunk, I'm ready to start assembling the bunks themselves.

Started on the lower bunk. Here is the frame being fitted.

I elected to turn the frame on its side in spite of the loss of strength in this orientation. The bunk is the perfect height with the 1" width and is too high with the 2" height. Here is the underside frame cut to size.

The bolts on the port side bracket would interfere with the placement I wanted on the bottom bunk so I had to make room in the bottom frame. It's not pretty but it works.

BTW, here is the scarfed joint installed. It just needs a bit of filler and some sanding.

The bottom bunk falls 2" in its 6' length in relation to the shelf rail. The problem is that the seat back is going to take on the level of the rail, which it is going to be attached to. I can make up about an 1" in play by keeping the seat back just above the lower bunk. With a 1" shim on the right side of the bunk, it looks a lot better. I am considering incorporating this shim into a base for the bottom bunk (a kind of subframe).

When shimmed, you can see that it is close to the line of the shelf and the seatback won't look odd.

With the bottom basically finished, I need to figure the height of the rail on the base and position the back so that it can be hinged and pivot. Here is the base in place with the back close to its marks.

Here is a bress piano hinge dry fitted. No question that the measurements are correct and the hinge fits. The piano hing just doesn't look strong enough for me. I am re-thinking this and considering three larger stainless hinges.

The bunks are built and ready for final fitting. The rails on the bunks are recycled teak from the original outside rail along the amas.

And here is the top and bottom fitted in-place so that the bottom can accommodate a 3" foam cushion. Next step is a final fitting and hinging the top bunk.

Now that the bunks are roughed-in, its time to concentrate on finishing off the port side. I have not decided what to do with the port cabinet and the area to the fore of the bunks. For now, I'm carpeting the setee and putting a solid vinyl insert into the space occupied by the cabinet.

The plan, at the moment, is to cut out a piece of 1/4" luan and cover it with vinyl to tack into the space where the port cabinet was. I am thinking about a chart table there or simply extending the seating area. I'm thinking about using the port cabinets for installing any electronics that I want mounted. I can install them right into the face of the vinyl insert. So, for now, I am carpeting the entire settee, all the way into the area under the cockpit. Once that is done, I can install the bunks. I'm hoping to get a lot of time this weekend with the 4th holiday. I'm taking the kids to the beach for a day, so I'll have some planning time.

If I can get that done, I can start on the starboard side. I'm going to replicate the pull-out double bed on that side, along with the galley. Once that is done, I can start hooking-up systems.

Edit: here is the carpeting being fitted. It makes the settee look really nice. It really pulls the whole thing together.

Quick Update since I'm swamped with work that I pushed-off until after the 4th Holiday. Finshed oiling the bunks. They're drying in my garage. They'll get one more coat after some scotchbrite-ing at 00 grade.

Also, started carpeting the well under the cockpit. It is kind-of cozy in there once it's carpeted. it will make a great place to store sails, weekend bags, etc.

Thanks for your kind words Joe. It gets lonely in this thread at times.

I have some basic carpentry skills that my dad made sure we all had (he was a builder) but other than that, I'm just feeling my way along.

Your right about the pace. It has really picked up as of late. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel (train?). I'm coming home from work now and putting an hour or so every night. I should have the entire port side finished soon. With everything I've picked up from figuring out the port side, the Starboard should go much easier.

But, thanks again for your encouragement.
