Mark 1 cabin refit ...

Here is the face bonded. A coat of oil brings out the grain nicely.

Here are the doors oiled as well. The old teak is adding a really nice touch, offsetting the lightness of the oak. I think the cabin is going to be bright.
I particularly like the look of the oil on the wood instead of polyurethane.

Once the glass is painted, the cabinet looks great.

Once the cabinet was done, I took a break and cleaned up some other smaller items I've been meaning to do. The galley is more of a challange than I had anticipated. There is a lot to consider with every step. I find it motivating (of at least less frustrating) to stop a more complicated task and do so simpler things so I can see some more progress. So, I turned to immitating Joe Walling's bin installation.

It's an easy installation. Looks great too. Shame it'll never be seen.

By the way Joe ... what is that grey stuff you use on your bins as an edging?

Here you can see the door-stops in the cabinet. I put one in too far and I'll have to sand it back with a dremmel.

Since I put the step in the companionway, I wanted to reinforce it. The step is fine and does not flex, but I will be using it when I have a lot of gear in my arms and want to make sure it can handle a significant load. I put together these brackets out of oak.

The installation is straight-forward. The bracket is screwed and glued at the back and on the top, under the step.

Here are both brackets installed.

Okay, enough fun ... back to the hard stuff.

Started playing with the placement of the galley top. Still not sure what I'm using. I started building the frame for the top.

The corners are mitered and I am using glue blocks to keep the corners strong. If I had a table saw nearby, I would use a lap joint for this corner instead.

Having the frame really helps positioning the rest of the galley parts.

I have to leave room to build a tray under the propane insert so I can vent any leakage directly outside.

That's it for now.

Played hookey Friday and went to the boat show. I was originally planning to go on Saturday, but work looked like it was not going to cooperate. So, I decided to sneek away for a quick trip to Annapolis on Friday morning.

Came back Friday night ... full of motivation. Here is a picture of making the back-splash template.

And, here is the layout of the counter top frame with offset brace.

Took a few seconds off to install a fire extinguisher in the doorway. Decided that I wanted a fire extinguisher in the cabin during the refit before I started doing electrical work.

Fitting the oak plywood back.

The plywood base for the top is cut and fitted. It is basically ready for formica.
