Mk 2 rig setup

Post by Gin »

The boat goes like a train but alarmingly we have just noticed a feature which has probably been there for years- namely mast inversion.

There is a gentle reverse curve to the mast from masthead to deck even at rest which, today, we may have partially improved, at least for the lower section below the spreaders, by increasing the tension on the baby stay.

We have yet to check whether there is any rake but there is no weather helm at all - no lee helm either, come to that.

There is considerable luff sag on the wind and not much adjustment left in the twin backstays but these too have been tightened a couple of turns today to see if that helps. We feel that more backstay tension could correct the section above the spreaders and bring the mast back into column- does this sound reasonable?

We are apprehensive about winding on too much tension on this lightly built boat for fear of bending the boat and not resolving the inversion and sag issues, so some rig tension figures would be very, very useful to give us an idea of safe limits.
