Telstar 26 Conversion

Post by boatfreakxxl »

Hello Together!

I am proud to present my work of the last year to convert a Telstar 26. Now the boat is much easier to trailer and can be easily assembled by one (1) Person in a few hours (app. 4 when trained).
The main point of this conversion was the rebuild of the amas, using the old as a basis.
- cut the deck section off
- remove foam (which was full with water)
- remove all bulkheads and frames
- close inner amas sides
- install strut guides inside the amas to change from 1 centerboard in main hull to 2 x struts in the amas
- close amas with new deck
- connect amas with stainless steel brackets to main hull
- close gap with multihull net

The result was a great weight reduction: 315kg was the weight of each ama before conversion. Now the weight is app. 85kg each and can be easily handled by 2 persons.
You can find all pictures on my website http://www.trimaranesperanza.jimdo.com (sorry the explanations are in german), but I will post some here.

The first test was great! you can feel the weight reduction extrem. Also without any struts it was easy to sail.

The second big conversion was the rebuild of the interior.
- removal of floor and centerboard
- new engine bulkhead
- new floor (now you have full head height at all locations!!!) I will later post the exact dimensions
- new kitchen
- gas installation with 2 x 5kg gas bottles in the aft compartment
- electric toilet in the aft compartment

But see the pictures...

boatfreakxxl, thank you very much for posting your most interesting conversion of a Telstar 26. It looks lovely and nicely represents the hard work you put into it! The weight savings is significant.

A question regarding the centerboard elimination: could you describe what exactly you installed in the amas, perhaps with photos? Thank you.

Hey Joe,

at the moment there are only the two shafts close to the front beam (look at the foto "test without net")
The struts itself aren't finished yet, but it was not really a problem to sail without, although the rudder pressure wasn't too small.
As soon as I have finished the struts I will post pictures here.

Hi,
I currently have my Telstar 26 in a boat yard. I am going to have the same conversion to my amas as you undertook. This will be in addition to a few extras. can you give me any update on how your boat is performing and any issues you have had with the modifications you have done.

Lessons learnt.

Any help very much appreciated.

Do you have a full 16' beam with your conversion? It looks shorter than my Mark I unfolded.
