Site Registration temporarily disabled

I'm getting several hundred requests for new user registration every day. Over 600 just today. They all seem to be fake, from Russia, etc. I can't handle this volume anymore, so I temporarily disabled the registration process. I'll start it up again in a few days and take another look.

Opened it up for 2 days. Let one in who looked OK (out of 20 more who did not). He posted garbage (a link to ???) on every topic on the entire site. Saw it and knocked him and his garbage out. Registration is closed again.

I shut down user registration again. Got around 300 fake ones yesterday and another 200 today. I'll open it up again in a few days.

Had to shut down new registrations again. Got about 300 new ones in the last 2 days, and they all looked fake when I glanced thru the list. I (or the new administrator) will open it again in 2 or 3 days. This seems to be a problem which occurs maybe every month or so. We usually get around 2 or 3 a day (and they are usually fake as well).

Ron, I am now trying to email the seemingly legit applications for admission, and looking for cogent responses before letting them in
