Does anyone have any objections to putting our names, addresses, phone numbers and email id's on a list in the protected area of the forum under Members Only, or maybe on the web site with similar protection. It would make it much easier for everyone to find out if there is another boat nearby. Dan and I have that luxury already.

Some people may be uncomfortable about that, and I'll hold off until I hear from some of you.

I have no objections to sharing my contact info with other members, but I'm a bit reluctant to store it on a site like this. It may not be hard for someone malicious to break in and get access to all that info. No offense to anyone maintaining the site, it's just reality :-)

How about this - we already have a Members section (link on the right-top of the page). We could do a few things with it:
- encourage people to post their location, maybe agree on some standard way of doing this, so we can easily search for "people near me".
- see if we can restrict access to this list to registered association owners only.

For individual contact, I'd suggest to use Private Message option on the board and let people exchange e-mail and phone through that if they want more convenient means of communication.

Thanks,
Maciek

You've got to be in the member group to get to the member section of the forum, but I'm sure that someone can get in it if they really want to and have some talent. I've turned away about 50 scammers who attempted to join the forum in the last week, and none have gotten in so far. The website could be a better place for this stuff, but I'd leave it up to Dan to see what he thinks. He designed both and should know their vulnerability, and they are on one of his servers. My point is that it is nice to have this stuff available. There are 5 other members near me in NJ and I'm the only one who knows it. One has gone sailing with me and another will in a few weeks. That's one of the benefits of having an owners association - getting the owners together.

I'm definitely in favor of getting this stuff distributed in a safe manner.

I think this is a good idea. If you look at how I registered myself. I put my location as Florida, then in my signature I said I was in the Panhandle on the Gulf Coast. I have already observed one other person in New Orleans. I can contact them by email should the opportunity arise to get that way or visa versa. I prefer my address and phone number not be listed. I have no trouble with my email being listed.

Pat

The owner / member list is now available thru the members only section, until Dan gets it on the website. It has only first and last name, city, country, hull number and boat name. The forum only has "user id", no name or email, and you could be Jack the Ripper or George Bush for all we know. There is no correlation to name or email id and I don't have a forum "user id" on the database for mabe 1/3 of the members. One day I'll try to figure out who is who, but it's difficult at times. I'll add the user id's I have to this list now.

When we expand the owner / member list on the secure website, I can add email address and/or phone number - if I have them. I'll keep sttreet address off of it.

The member / owner list now contains the forums "user id" for about 2/3 of the people, and it can be linked from the members section. If you notice that your name does not have a "user id", let me know what it is and I'll correct it. This will eventually wind up on the web site.

I don't have a problem with having my name, home port and email listed for members, be nice to know who's close.
