Port ama binding

Post by jackalope »

My T-28 is sitting on her trailer with
the mast & furled genny standing. I
need access to the port link boxes...
Since "murphy" is a close friend, I wanted to ask those of you with prior
experence a few questions.
1. Has anyone experenced the main
hull shifting in it's cradle while
swinging the ama hull out on the
trailer ?
2. If I have to get on the ama while
full open, would my 3" nylon shipping
straps attached between the opposite
side of the hull & trailer frame be
adequate or do I need to fabricate
some jackstands to prevent damage
to the link boxes ?
Thanks in advance for your input.......

I think you're generally safer with both ama's all of the way out at the same time, especially if you want to put any real weight on one of them. Think about using saw-horses with a 1 ft x 3 ft (or so) piece of plywook between the ama hull and the saw-horse. If the ama is not all of the way out I think you will have to fabricate something to help support the link box. It probably can't take any major load unless it is at either end of it's travel. The fiberglass may wind up with the load instead of the large steel brackets. Give Tony a call to see what he recommends in this case.

What do the T-28 amas weigh? I think the 8M weigh around 600lbs but am not sure.

I have had Reboot on a trailer for a bit now and have not noticed any shifting of the main hull with only one ama out. I did do two things that help greatly, first is removing the black netting. With the nets removed I found it easy to get to the amas and akas without having to climb onboard. Second, I placed two jack stands under the back of the trailer taking just enough weight off the tires to prevent the boat from moving when climbing aboard or opening an ama. This gave the boat a nice solid feel to it.
